The first was from my agent who booked me a job. Not exactly the kind of thing I REALLY want, but I'll take it. It's a crime reenactment type gig (i.e. America's Most Wanted etc.) The other was for an audition for a scene remake of "On the Waterfront." It's a student film, not paid like the other, but certainly closer to what I like to do. Plus, it seems the team working on the film is really experienced. That certainly helps the mood some!

Peculiars Update and more...

Well, a few months later and I am happy to say I got the part in The Peculiars Film. I will be playing a villain in the form of an evil mime. That's right! I'm not alone there's a whole group of us, lol. Also, Obama Girl, from Youtube fame, has joined the cast. I don't know much about her, but apparently she draws a bit of an audience. It's sure to be a good time, and filming is quickly approaching. Check out this link to see FX tests, concept footage, and even donate a buck or two towards production costs: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/128566301/the-peculiars-an-indie-superhero-action-film

I am really excited to hear about another opportunity that is finally coming around. There's an indie Thriller film written by a friend, Carl Bowman, that is finally up on the docket. I've been fortunate enough to be given the lead in this original film project, and I have been waiting patiently for the ball to get rolling on it. Carl wisely didn't want to rush production on the film, Dead Eyes, as he had a lot of commitments over the past year. But like I said, the tie has finally come. I met with Carl last week, and we had a great talk about the script, shooting, and casting. The best part is we'll be filming almost entirely in Fredricksburg, VA. Needless to say I' really stoked about it!

Peculiars

I had my Peculiars audition this Friday. The Bright Lights and Promises shoot was really great and really fun. I played an extra part as a bar patron. We only filmed one scene for four hours. Believe it or not, it was fairly exhausting. The scene was hilarious because the main character was "singing" (she was lip singing from a ipod), and she had this big reveal where we found out she was not who we thought she was. So we had to act surprised over and over again, lol. So funny. The girl I was seated at the table with was a major drag. She must have been tired, because she was barely even moving by the end of it. It's not for the weak :)

In other news there is an low budget super hero movie filming in Baltimore over the Summer. Anyone who knows me is probably thinking, "Well that makes a lot of sense." Yeah, I like my super hero movies. But this seems like a pretty cool thing. The film is called "The Peculiars." It looks like it may be in the "Heroes" vein, but I can't say for sure. I got a response from the casting department the other day, after I sent in my headshot and resume, to schedule an audition. I am pretty stoked!! I have to prepare a monologue for the audition, which does scare the crap out of me. I tink I have finally landed on one. "The Invisible Man" by H.G. Wells. Not 100% sure though. What would you do? I need to figure it out fairly quickly. Maybe a trip to the library is in order.

Bright Lights and Promises

Cool news for this weekend. I got the opportunity to be an extra in a film being filmed in Manassas, VA. The movie is called "Bright Lights and Promises." I believe it to be named after the song of the same title by 60's artist Janis Ian. I also believe the movie is taken from a musical, which again shares the same name. My part is minuscule. I'll be playing a bar patron, while the actors and actresses perform songs. That said, I couldn't be more excited about it. The film is being produced by experienced producers and is poised to run the festival circuit (local festivals, Sundance, etc.) Stoked. I'll actually be filming tomorrow and Sunday the 28th. The film has been shooting since 09, and these seem to be the last remaining shots before the film is finished. It sounds like a really cool project. I'll try to sneak some pics at the shoot ;)

ZA4jmae

My friend, Jenna, who was one of the people I went to South Africa with this past summer, has started her own blog. I prefer this to the treadmill at the gym. It's nice to be outside and to have something tangible to see and touch to know how far I've gone. The gym doesn't provide that. So I decided it would be fun to just let the ipod go on random and make a soundtrack for the day. And to keep me accountable, I decided to blog them every day. Today's soundtrack is:

1. "Me, Myself, and I" - De La Soul
2. "Youth of the Nation" - P.O.D.
3. "This Years Love" - David Grey (had to skip that one half way through),
4. "Redemption Song" - Switchfoot,
5. "Adam's Song" - Blink 182

Seems short doesn't it. Seriously, the best adventure of my life. I still can't fully understand the scope of what that trip was. I can't even believe I was in Africa. It was amazing, and the staff at Thrive Africa was even more unbelievable. I made this vid to show some of the stuff we saw and did. Watching it I can still smell the grass and the air. I would probably jump at the chance to return. Which is what one of our team members is doing. Jenn McKee is going back to intern at Thrive Africa for a whole year. I'm a little jealous and a lot proud (?). I know this will be life changing for her. I'm not driving. I'm not planning. I'm not fighting sleep because I woke up too early. I'm not finding ways to appease other people. I'm not fighting with family. I'm not pretending to laugh at jokes that aren't funny. I'm not hanging out with people I don't know very well. I'm not eating an ungodly amount of bad food. And I am looking forward to nothing, rather than two or three things I wish I didn't have to do. I am home!! It is soooo great. I woke up with Kristin and her sister, Laura. Had some Irish coffee, a new tradition, and opened presents. All my presents were perfect! I hope the ones gave were met with as much joy inside as was seen outside. Currently I'm watching Season 5 of LOST, a gift from Laura, and looking forward to the Chargers/Titans game tonight, an extra special present from the NFL. I was hoping Ed Reed would have a good game, but as it turns out he didn't even play. The Baltimore offense and defense looked lackluster and unmotivated. There were so many penalties in the game from both teams that it made the commentator say, "If these are both playoff teams they need to get their acts together." I agree with that. I don't care much about the Packers playoff road, but the Ravens just made it a whole bunch more difficult on themselves to even make the playoffs. The Ravens record dropped to 6-6 which ties them with the majority of the teams in the division. I just wish, as a fan, they would have taken advantage of these other teams having mediocre seasons. Instead, it seems they've joined these teams with sub par performances. Well here's hoping the Ravens win and the right team lose so they can make it into the post-season.

In anticipation of the Baltimore Ravens Monday Night game

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v9.nonxt4.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Db9cc59e56b3d7318%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1329965574%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D5D299E1674C81A9F461853BC5182840ABBADBD73.2640D5C4BFEA14ECC656EE5D4B7E6CAB7471D66A%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Db9cc59e56b3d7318%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DuC83sn26_orbcyz-uNaYGldikRs&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

My favorite player of all time. I was lucky enough to be apart of it again as the character Jacob. Had a lot of fun today, despite all the rain. The weather was a pain, but it really did add to shoot. It really helped the backdrop look destitute and barren. Overall it was a big success. And the best part is...we finished it all this time. The last production was a lot of fun, but we did not shoot all the scenes. In web series format, the footage we shot was an entire seasons worth. Probably about 6 or 7 three minute webisodes. Today, we shot the entire script that we had last time, but that is all the first episode, lol. Which hopefully means steady work ;) My only regret was that the director didn't get to use his new camera, which I know he was excited about. Technical difficulties squashed that plan, but overall the shoot was good.

Bummer is that I got home in time to watch the second half of the SEC title game in which Florida lost to Alabama. Florida's 22 game winning streak and hopes for an undefeated championship season were lost. Man I would have loved to see that. I hope Tebow still wins his second Heisman, and I am excited to see where he goes in the NFL. Go Gators.

Ugh! Now, I don't know all the details that go into this transition, but I am extremely excited about it. Shooting begins this Saturday in Richmond, VA. I'm sure it will be an all day event, so...sorry to Noelle and her moving buddies, wish I could make it to help out. However, I will be occupied. Still waiting on the contract to come through the e-mail which, according to the e-mail, includes details about distribution and compensation. Again, I have no idea what these details are exactly, but the fact that details on distribution and compensation even exist, is a great thing. Hopefully you'll be able to check it out soon.

SO...

So, I started a blog on another site and planned on making that the primary spot to write useless opinions and facts. We had to trek to Richland, New Jersey to play the New Jersey Broncos. Kick off was set to be at 6:00 PM. After leaving home at about noon on Saturday afternoon, I finally arrived at the field 10 minutes before kick off. That bumpy start for me did not translate on the field w/ the rest of the team. The offense rolled and the defense stifled. Final score: 22-7. I even had a catch for a first down to officially get me in the books. The Falcons are now 3-0 for the first time.

With all that you would think the trip was really worth it. And in retrospect, it was. If you did the math already you would know it took about 6 hours to get to New Jersey. According to Google Maps, that's about twice as long as it should take. We hit a traffic jam in each of the three states we passed through. We paid what feels like one weeks salary in tolls. And we also found out that little towns in NJ hate to use street signs. More than once during the trip I was ready to cal it quits. After all we were still in VA at 2:00 PM. We ended up in Harford County, MD, where I grew up, at one point, and my thought was to cut our losses and turn back. Kristin particularly found it annoying that you can't pump your own gas in NJ. Especially when the tank is filled and you have to wait 10 minutes for Johnny Attendant to come just to take the pump out of your car.

But hey! We made there and back without a scratch. We survived to fight another day. We don't have to drive to New Jersey again this year, and quite honestly, that might be the last time I ever go intentionally. I'm sure there are good parts of New Jersey. But, not on our route.

Making plans

All my friends at NHS in Fredericksburg, VA have been hit with a reality check this week. The branch in FBurg is being moved to North Carolina. I think it sucks. I'm sure some think it sucks more. I' massuming this is one of those "business not personal" situations, but how do you not take it personally? "Uh, yeah, we're going to be moving the office in which you work. Now if you want to uproot what life you have here and move we're cool with that, but otherwise you're kinda SOL." Not exactly the conversation you would want to hear I would imagine. "So the times they are a changing." Good luck everyone. I'll personally be interested to see how many people follow NHS further down the coast. If I were a betting man I would wager on the under.

The Fredericksburg Falcons are making plans to fly into the preseason. Our second practice of the week goes on tonight. The offense, which I'm partial to, had a great showing on Tuesday night. The scrimmage was only able to last about 30 minutes, but the O managed a touchdown on the final play. I'm still in the running (as far as I know) for starting tight end. I had the longest pass play for any tight ends in practice so far. Tuesday I was fortunate enough to grab a pass break a tackle and turn it p field for a little over 20 yards. I got a few nasty scratches and massive bump on my forearm after the play. My second of the practice season. It led me to think, "How on Earth do NFL and college players avoid these nasty bumps." Both times for me they came from smacking my forearm against another players helmet. How can that not happen on a regular basis in higher level football? We'll make some efforts to avoid these nagging injuries. In the immortal words of Ray Lewis, "Pain is only temporary no matter how long it lasts."

Yesterday was a smorgasbord of good movies! Blcokbuster.com came through and delivered Apaloosa right to my door. Wow! What a good movie! It's a western, which I'l admit I won't sit down and watch western's on a regular basis, but I really enjoyed this movie. And in fanboy fashion, Drew and I attended the midnight showing of Terminator Salvation last night. Now Drew is more geeky about the Terminator franchise than I am. I enjoyed just about every second of the movie. McG (yeah McG the Charlie's Angels director) did a pretty awesome job. Although there were times I couldn't tell if Christian Bale was John Connor or Batman, it was a a good flick. The character Marcus Wright kicks A! I wish I was him. Of corse if I was I wouldn't need to worry about annoying forearm injuries!

Ah well, looking forward to another good day today. Springfest coming up this Saturday. Let's roll!!! Tweet up!

Tweeting

I am so into Twitter right now. I really have no idea why. It has nothing to do with anything in real life. For some reason I think it is extremely fun to see what people like Ashton Kutcher, Steve Nash, Lance Armstrong, etc are up to. In no way do I see these people as my "friends", though I see how that reality could be confused. What a good way to break the communication barrier. Celebrities on Twitter are so much more accessible, and Twitter seems to break the "celeb barrier." I mean in the age of Clark Gable and Lucille Ball and Marilyn Monroe, that was part of the mystique of being a celebrity. Businesses were built and sustained on the simple fact that celebrities frequented there. It made the location as famous as the celebrities who visited. Nowadays we can see how human celebrities really are. I'm sure people used to wonder so often what celebrities did while not on the silver screen. Now we know. People like Alyssa Milano and P. Diddy post pictures of themselves at normal everyday places doing normal everyday things like you and I. I mean, how awesome is it to see your favorite celeb just chilling out at Taco Bell? Or, reading about your favorite athlete while s/he give you an inside look at the life of a pro athlete. I assume Twitter will fade away into the fad sunset eventually, and it will likely be replaced by something else. For now though I am really enjoying it. Not for any particular reason, but just the novelty of the idea. Oh yeah, follow me @shoresy!!!!

Back from the dead. Dead World Diaries, Semi-Pro football...and more!

Ok ok so I haven't written in a number of months. I wasn't actually dad, which should be obvious, but I have been very tired. There is much to write, but let's address some of the last blogs posted before my short hiatus. Dead World Diaries, the web series that I was a part of (which episode 1 is posted below) has been put on a hiatus of it's own. Few were able to view episode two before it was taken down from Youtube. What gives? Glad you asked. Dead World Diaries (the episodes shot and script) was highly enjoyed by local TV executives. The creator/director, Greg Daye, was asked to transform the web series into a television series. I believe the station interested is PBS or a small local station like that. Still very cool! Greg has started the process of rewriting the script and adjusting the story for TV. He is attempting get an entire season of material. I have been contacted about continuing my role as Jacob, which I am excited about. Hopefully this will out turn out very well. Stay tuned...

Semi-pro football with the Fredericksburg Falcons is in full gear. Literally, we are in full gear and starting to get own to real business. The last time I wrote about football, the Falcons were in the middle of our Winter workouts. Boy have things evolved since then! We started our official practices in April. We got a lot of work in there. About two weeks ago we started hitting in full pads. That was a wake up call for me. I haven't hit or been hit in about 12 years. I was really depressed when I did that math. Fortunately for me since I play tight end, taking a hit hasn't been difficult. It's making a hit on other people that I production. Looking forward to improving in that and all other areas in the upcoming weeks. First scrimmage game is 6/6/09. Won't be there because I'm busy that day ;). League games officially start 7/11/09. Let's get nuts!!

On a smaller note, I signed up on Twitter after much psychological resistance. I admit it's pretty cool. I guess I need a blackberry now so I can get really hooked. Find me on Twitter and follow me. I promise it's much cooler than it seems!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://shoresyrecord.blogspot.com/2009/05/back-from-dead-dead-world-diaries-semi.html' title='Back from the dead. Well as I've said before it's not a movie, it's a web-series. If you're a little confused and not sure what a web-series is, don't stress I didn't know much about them either. Now I am convinced that web-series will take over the world. Web-series are a series of little 4 to 5 minute episodes with usually no name actors and low budget shooting, editing, and production. It's the indie scene of film. And it's awesome. A lot of the stories are top notch, and if the writers wrote for big TV companies, these series' would be hits. One of the web-series I am involved with is called Dead World Diaries. DWD for short. DWD is a post apocalyptic story involving a handful of survivors following a disaster that has destroyed much of the Earth. For all those friends of mine who were asking and who happen to stop by the blog every now and again, you get the first look. The director literally just posted in episode on Youtube. In episode 1 you meet Jacob (myself) and Timothy (Cal Bowman Jr.). Jacob is a rough looking dude who is ready to off himself as he's lost everything he had. Timothy is a preacher who stumbles across Jacob and convinces him there may be more to life. I was pretty happy with the episode. It wasn't very deep script wise, but I think the point gets across. My only regret is I wish I had spoken louder, it's hard to hear sometimes I think. Or maybe it's just my computer. Anyway enjoy, comment away, and laugh accordingly. Speaking of which there is supposed to be a female scream at the end of the scene. To me it sounds like a dude emulating a female scream. That cracks me up. But it's also the beauty of web-series in the truest form. And before you ask, I have no idea what happens next. Thank you guys for being so curious. With no more adieu, Dead World Diaries Episode 1

The list

OK so week two of winter workouts for the Falcons is over. It was a little more intense this past week. I thought I would be smart and not workout at the gym at all until the workout session. That turned out to be a mistake. Waiting to work out until 7:00pm is never a good idea unless you have no other choice. I figured rather than reminisce about the pain it would be easier to make a list of what exactly hurt all week long.

1. Left wrist
2. hamstrings
3. calves
4. right shoulder
5. lower back
6. triceps
7. chest
8. butt
9. right ankle

Considering the only body parts I was concentrating on working out on Wednesday was my chest and triceps. I really feel the list should NOT be that long. Ah well, it is sure to be worth it. I also got a yearly schedule e-mailed to me on Friday:

Good Day Future Falcons,
I just wanted to share the below info. with you for planning purposes. I recently became a member of the Fredricksburg Falcons. It's a semi-pro football team here in Fredericksburg, VA. Now, my first thought was to have a video blog, or vlog if you will, documenting the experiences that go along with such a thing. After some thought though, I decided I didn't feel like doing that. So, I will write about some of the events leading up to the season. I'll throw some videos and pics ip as they become available.Right now there isn't too much to be excited about. Playing football at any level requires a lot of preparation. Well, it does if you want to be successful. The Falcons Winter workouts started last Wednesday. Winter workouts is basically focusing on getting your body ready and loose for the upcoming season. There's a lot of running and cardio involved. I was nervous heading into the workout, because the last time I had a football workout (which was *gasp* almost 10 years ago) it was rather intense. So I prolonged my normal gym visits to two hours and concentrated a lot on cardio and such. Well, when I showed up to practice last week, I found I had overestimated the intensity that was being used in these workouts. Six laps. Yup six laps around a track. The track was half the size of an outside track and six laps was equal to a half of a mile. So that was the only required training for the day. The rest of the time was to be used doing whatever kind of workout you would normally do. So it wasn't quite as eventful as I thought it might be, but my overtraining definitely helped me to be prepared. I am assuming that in the weeks to come the mandatory parts of each workout will become more difficult, and practices should prove challenging. Anyway that's all for now. By the way this increased workout lifestyle has caused decreased awareness of hygiene. As I type this I am sitting having worked out for two hours yesterday and spent time in the steam room without showering. Yeah I'll take care of that now.

The Mac is coming...

Yeah so a couple of years ago a friend Paul bought a Mac. I figured I would never buy a Mac. It's too different from what I'm used to and why spend so much money? Last year, my friend and roommate John bought a Mac of his own. John really enjoys sharing things with people, and he shared with me all the cool things on his brand new wedding dress white Mac. "Wow!" I thought. What cool things!?! Garage Band, a music program that a novice music scientist such as myself (not John) could use effectively, seemed really cool. MacMovie seemed like something I would really like to make amateur movies, something I've always wanted to do but never had the drive enough to break down and buy the necessary things. All kinds of things that would be really cool to have to enable me to produce and share so many things I do for a hobby. But nah, I still wouldn't buy one. Too expensive. Too much hype. Too complicated.

I'll switch gears for a moment and tell you the story of a laptop named Sue. Sue is a laptop I adopted from my wonderful (and lucky) girlfriend, Kristin. Kristin got a new laptop for her birthday from her parents. I say she is lucky because if I asked my parents for a laptop for my birthday, I may end up with a toaster oven. Being resourceful and opportunistic as I am, I decided to save Sue (aka the old computer) from a death of sitting on an old desk covered up by papers and books. I didn't have a laptop so I adopted Sue as my own, ya know, so I could sit in front of the TV AND be on the computer. Well, old Sue isn't what she used to be. Granted she wasn't what she used to be when I took her in, but now she's in bad shape. You see Sue had a preexisting problem staying powered on. In fact there is no battery at all left to charge. Sue has to stay plugged into the wall or else she shuts right off without warning. Sue also started being real temperamental. She doesn't really liked to be moved... at all. Frequently if someone moves Sue to get a better view of the YouTube video, she'll just go blank. Dead. Unplug, plug back in, power on, sign on, wait. Repeat. I try not to complain, but recently Sue has been getting lazy. Now I can't even watch a video any longer than anything on YouTube or listen to music extensively. Some websites that use flash don't stand a chance. Sue just revs up like a jet engine and gone. Black screen.

Well, I was content to stick with Sue, but I was also looking to upgrade. My resident "Mac Master" and roommate Alan found me a deal I couldn't refuse. Skipping the details it looks like I'll be getting a Mac. The forbidden fruit. The one thing I thought I would never buy. The one thing I really wanted, but never planned on having. Well that means a lot more blogging, a lot more video posts, and a lot more cool pictures and fun stuff that Sue just really doesn't like doing. No worries, Sue won't be forgotten. In fact, I have a place on my desk all picked out for her to sit.

No use crying over spilled paint water.

I've been breaking out the old paint supplies recently and experimenting with the medium again. I used to paint and draw in high school and college and I was missing it. Well, so far I and remembering that it isn't as easy as it sometimes seems to paint a picture that can be interpreted or appreciated. But I have had a lot fun just tooling around and using new brushes and papers and stuff. Last night I was experimenting wit ha couple new tubes of paint I bought last week. I was basically just painting different contrasts and rinsing my brushes out in a solo cup, when while using my fingers to squeeze the brush dry, I yanked the bristles off the brush and spilled the gray paint water all over my clean ivory carpet. D'oh! I kind of sat there for a minute watching the water soil my carpet and wondering what to do. Then I sprung into action carrying the cardboard box that doubled as a pallet, which was now also soaked in paint water, and threw it in the bath tub. It seemed reasonable at the time. And par for the course in "the house that Fong built," both bottles of heavy duty carpet cleaner under the sink are empty. So I was left with a towel and elbow grease to try and restore some of my carpets dignity. It wasn't a total lost cause, as most of the color came out rather easily. But there is a still a pretty visible spot right in the center of my room. I hope to clean it up before the roommates see it (or read this)! :)

I've decided having a daughter wouldn't be too bad.

It may come as a shock to some, but I like to think about the future sometimes. When I was 18 I envisioned myself being a father around the age of 25. Well, I am now 26 and deathly afraid of having children anywhere in the foreseeable future. I used to think, "Oh by 25 I'll be making bank, and I can handle a youngin'." Besides, you want to be young and active while they're little so you can be a fun parent right? I thought so. Now, I hope I'm active when I'm 50, because I am not too stoked about fatherhood. To be honest though, if any readers have seen or been around Ariella Murphy, she can change your mind. I have recently warmed up more to the idea of wanting children sometime. It was a slow move from "No thanks... no children...ever...mom!" And for a time I was content wanting NO DAUGHTERS! Not allowed. I mean I'm 26 and I don't understand women in my own age range. How the heck am I supposed to raise one (or more) emotional, confusing, sensitive, fragile female when I know nothing about it? Nope, I was all about having a little guy. They're tough, though admittedly not always the smartest. You can play with them and they'll get all muddy and gross, but it will be really fun. They can get into trouble, but for some reason it appears males don't drive their parents so crazy during those awkward teenage years. Granted there are plenty of stories to the contrary, but it just feels like it. To quote "10 Things I Hate About You," the father in the movie explains what I feel it's like to raise a daughter. He says, "And I'll get a good night sleep. The deep slumber of a father whose daughters aren't out being impregnated." I can't imagine being tortured with worry for hours wondering where you're daughter is. I guess it's the same with sons, but I think you just assume they aren't as much of a target as females for whatever is out there. That sounds silly. But recently I have been seeing the brighter side of raising a daughter. I might even want to have one some day. I think it could be fun being "the protector" where as most fathers want their sons to see them as "cool dad." I've been coming across some video interviews on YouTube of actors or celebrities talking about fatherhood. It made me really think about it. I guess I shouldn't be so afraid of a daughter. I think it would be fun to sing "Melissa" (Allman Bros.) while she goes to sleep. And it will probably be really funny to try to braid or pony tail hair and pretend it's pretty. I don't know if I could ever watch Hannah Montana or the like, and I'm not sitting at any tea parties or playing Barbies. But, it may not be all bad. Maybe a little girl wouldn't be the hell I imagine. But I still don't plan on finding out for quite a while.

Ranking the last 10 movies I watched...

I'll preface by saying I don't normally suggest movies to people. I guess I have my own style and sometimes people don't like the same type of movies I do. But since joining Blockbuster online I've been watching lots of movies. Here are some I've watched in the past month and what I think of them. I'll rate the movies on the following scale. 1 star: Wish I didn't rent it. 2 stars: Not bad, glad it's over. 3: Worth the rent. 4: Buy It!

10. Rules of Attraction - Starring: James Van Der Beek, Jessica Biel, Shannyn Sossamon. 1 Star*
What a stinker. This movie is mildly entertaining for the first 20 minutes or so, but it just loses something. The movie is directed by Roger Avary and is an adaptation of the book by Bret Easton Ellis. I have a feeling the book was better with than the film turned out. I was intrigued to check it out because Bret Easton Ellis is the author of American Psycho (Christian Bale starred in the film version). That movie wasn't that good either, but I liked that some of the characters were supposed to intertwine. Well in the movie version they didn't. The movie depicts the confusing and not entertaining lives of spoiled rich college kids obsessed with drugs, sex, and death. I don't think that subject matter makes a good movie unless it's done on an innovative way. All the stereotypes are included, though the acting is good. The movie just doesn't seem to get where it's going very quickly wherever that might be.

9. The Order - Starring: Heath Ledger and Shannyn Sossamon. 2 stars**
Not a really great movie. Heath Ledger and Shannyn Sossamon joined Mark Addy in this film right after they all starred together in A Knight's Tale. The acting is pretty good, and the story isn't terrible. It's a supernatural thriller where Heath Ledger plays a priest who fights very tangible demons. There's some very weird idea about the Catholic hierarchy, which I though was funny. Heath Ledger's character is chasing a being called a Sin Eater, who was responsible for killing his mentor. The Sin Eater is a way to forgive sins when the Catholic church refuses to. The movie takes you on a trip through the religious underworld where things go bump in the night. The end is a little predictable and I think the special effects nerds will be convinced they could do it better.

8. A Perfect Murder - Starring: Michael Douglas, Gwenyth Paltrow, Viggo Mortensen. 2stars**
I know it's an old movie. And honestly it's not that good. Micheal Douglas is a terrible actor in this flick. I honestly don't know if I've ever seen him in another movie, but this was bad. He's a smug rich businessman married to Gwyneth Paltrow's character, a trust fund baby who's having an affair with starving artist, Viggo Mortensen. Gwyneth Paltrow and Viggo Mortensen are pretty good considering. The movie feels like it went by really fast with minimal surprise and suspense, and it ends pretty abruptly. The deleted scene in the special features is actually comical since it's nearly exactly the scene that appears on film. The movie was based on the drama "Dial M for Murder" which focused on a telephone as the vehicle of bad things. The movie got away from that a bit. Slightly entertaining, but overall pretty uninspiring.

7. 28 Days - Starring: Sandra Bullock and Viggo Mortensen. 3 stars***
Surprisingly better than I thought. It was much better than romantic/comedy debacle I was expecting. There is an actual story about Sandra Bullock's alcoholic and out of control character who enters rehab with some hilarious characters. Of course there is the expected change of character moments at the center of the movie. Sandra Bullock is as always strangely convincing despite playing a shallow character. For getting dual billing, Viggo Mortensen doesn't appear in the film all that much. All the acting is good, which is probably what makes it possible to sit through the movie. The ending is not what you'd think, and it's rewarding enough.

6. Secret Window - Starring Johnny Depp. 3 stars***
I would say three and a half stars is even more accurate. I bought the movie, but I am a big Johnny Depp fan so that explains that. I remember this movie coming out, but I never saw it or had any expectations about it. In fact, as I remember the trailer, I thought it was more of a horror movie. It has that old school Friday the 13th feel at times, but it's more of a suspenseful thriller. Johnny Depp's character is a writer who secludes himself in a lakeside cabin to relieve his writer's block. A strange man visits him and brings an accusation of plagiarism. It's really interesting, and the first time I saw it I didn't guess the ending until it unfolded. It's not terribly original, but the movie is so well done that you don't jump to conclusions very quickly. And naturally Johnny Depp's acting is great. You even see a couple of "Captain Jack" facial expression during the movie, which I think is funny.

5. History of Violence - Starring: Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris. 3 stars***
For me it is a four star movie. I bought it. Like I said I have a unique style of movies I enjoy, and this is a unique movie. David Cronenberg is the director and his way of making movies is really cool. He doesn't always bother with back story or tying up loose ends in the story. He shows you what happens in the characters lives for the 2 hours they're on your screen. I think it's kinda cool. In this movie there's a lot of tension following Viggo Mortensen's character who is a back country good ol' family man. After his restaurant is held up at gunpoint, he heroically saves the day. His actions draw the attention of Ed Harris' character, a mob officer from Philadelphia. Ed Harris is awesome in the movie by the way. There is a tense "is he, isn't" feel to the movie after Ed Harris is convinced that Viggo's character is a former mob thug and brother to a powerful member in the mob. As the story unfolds you think you have a good grip on what's going on until the following scene. It's very back and forth. And of course the ending will disappoint if your a strict beginning, climax, to end movie watcher, but that's really the genius of the movie.

4. Good Will Hunting - Starring Matt Damon, Minnie Driver, Ben Affleck, and Robin Williams. 3 stars***
Again three and a half stars is more accurate. The movie isn't for everyone, but it's for most everyone. Good Will Hunting is an awesome movie. You may need to watch it a second time to truly appreciate it. It's the story of well, Good Will Hunting, a genius who wastes his gift bar hopping and fighting. There are some classic lines in this movie too, which I don't mind quoting if the opportunity arises. It's not the kind of movie that has a predetermined story attached to the title or genre. You don't know what the center of the movie is until you start watching it. Sure, it's a story about a genius who's stubborn and seem intent on being smarter than everyone, but refusing to actually use those smarts productively. There's everything you like in a drama without being forced. There's a very smooth transition between the story, the character development, and the ultimate ending. There's elements of a love story, dramatic telling of character back story, and an ending that isn't by any means an end. It's all done so well you don't really know how long you've been watching the movie before it's over. The acting is good, Robin Williams is exceptional.

3. Mystic River - Starring: Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, and Tim Robbins. 4 stars ****
I had to make this on a four star. It's so good. It's directed by Clint Eastwoodand it's the first movie I've seen directed by him. It's also the only movie I've seen starring Sean Penn. Sean Penn is incredible in this movie. Sometimes I surprised myself with how entranced I became with the movie. I was just watching Sean Penn's character so intently. The movie takes place in Massachusetts, and the actors to a really good job making you believe it with the spot on "Bahstan" accents. Not just the main characters, but every actor/actress is very believable. The back story to set up the movie is great, and it leaves you wondering just how it effected each character the way we see them in the present. A great movie that keeps you thinking throughout, not just about what's going on on-screen at the time either. Another movie with the tense "did he, didn't" moments as it appears Tim Robbins character, who was childhood friends with Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon's characters, may be responsible for the murder of Sean Pennn's favorite daughter. Tim Robbins is great as a mentally unstable character who unravels as the story moves. Sean Penn is an ex-con turned deeply passionate family man. Some of his scenes bring up the emotion he's depicting in yourself. I was sitting there grimacing when he was mad, and sitting long faced when he discovered his daughter dead. Kevin Bacon is underrated as an actor. He's great as a cop who reunites with his childhood pals in the most unlikely and unfortunate circumstances.

2. The Departed - Starring: Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson. 4 stars****
If you haven't scene this movie, and you are a fan of dramatic, gangster, non stop, take your breath away fight scenes that make you feel like you got a black eye movies. Go buy this movie. There has only been one time I bought a movie before I watched in theaters or before anyone told me how good it was. That movies was The Departed. I couldn't have been happier with the $4 I spent on a used copy at the pawn shop either. What? I bought it without knowing anything about it, I wasn't shelling out $19.87 at Wal-Mart for it though. It's a Scorsese film. I could stop typing now. It has all the twists and fight scenes you would expect and a few moments that make you throw your head back and say "Whoa, I can't believe that happened." The tension keeps you on the edge of your seat as you wait to see Leonardo Dicaprio work one side of the Law and Matt Damon on the other. Jack Nicholson's character is gross, old, and hilarious all at the same time. Jack is hardcore in this movie. Mark Wahlberg and Alec Baldwin steal the show for a bit adding some appropriate tension-breaking humor to some of the scenes. Very unpredictable, this movie allows you to grasp what is happening and then switches it up on you in a split second. At times I found myself smiling as events unfold differently than I predicted. It's like a chess game. And in the end you just chuckle and think, "Wow, that was awesome."

1. Eastern Promises - Starring: Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts. 4****
I love this movie! There are some movies that you watch and just take as fact. Like you just watched a documentary on the subject matter used in the film. This is one of those. Viggo and all the actors are so convincing as European characters that you forget who they really are. Of course, Viggo went above and beyond, making his character someone completely different than the person he really is. The dedication of David Cronenberg, the director, is invaluable. The scenes are filmed so well it's hard to imagine them being shot any differently. Again, it's a David Cronenberg film so the structure of the story is warped from what you would expect in a movie, but it is brilliant. There is a lot of violence, but it's done moderately without glorifying and still sticking with the story. Viggo plays a driver for the son of a Russian mobster. Viggo's character also "cleans up" after the son by whatever means necessary. There are points in the movie where Viggo's character is actually scary. And as in History of Violence, the story wraps up with you speculating what the characters would look like if the story were to continue.

Well those are the last 10 movies I've watched, and all within the last month. If you're not watching movies, then start. Maybe this will give you a place to look first. Got a movie you think I'll like or should see? Tell me, I'm always looking for something new, and I don't have a specific genre in which I' dedicated (despite the former list) so anything is fair game. Happy viewing.

Here we go. I imagine there are quite a few people traveling to the polls today who won't decide who they're voting for until the little half shower curtain closes behind them and they're faced with the decision. I like to think of my vote as an anonymous tip to the FBI. I quietly go into the polling place, slide the curtain closed, and cross the T's and dot the I's. But when I leave the poll, nobody will know who exactly who I made a difference (or indifference) for. I don't know why, maybe it's the birthday candle wish idea. Ya know, don't tell anyone or it won't come true. I wasn't very involved in the Bush/Gore election. I thought Gore was a psycho. He hasn't really swayed that thought. I felt pretty knowledgeable about the Bush/Kerry election. I ended up voting for Bush because I felt Kerry was a fraud and didn't actually believe anything he was saying. Lesser of two evils in my mind. This election though, I'm still a little torn. I know who I'll vote for, but I can't help but thinking about the candidates all the way to the poll. I actually agree with many things each candidate is offering. For once, I really haven't made a judgement quickly. And I love my friends for being split nearly right down the middle. Everyone has their own reasons for voting for a particular person. I think it's cool that we're still such good friends who value different priorities. I am excited to vote. My parents would be shocked at reading that. I also am stoked to get a free Chik-fil-A sandwich with my "I Voted" sticker. My parents would not be shocked at reading that. That's Democracy!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://shoresyrecord.blogspot.com/2008/11/its-big-day.html' title='Here we go. After being rained out two consecutive nights, the World Series was stopped for the first time in MLB history and continued two days later. Apparently, unless you lived in the Philadelphia or Tampa Bay areas, there was a very small crowd of people who actually cared. Sure, when I heard the two teams that were in the World Series I said "Oh wouldn't it be nice to see the Rays win it?" Though stating my preference for a victor I watched exactly as much of the World Series as I watched "House." Zero. Not one minute. Evidently I wasn't alone. These 2008 World Series, once the mecca of America's pastime, was the second lowest rated Word Series to date. In official terms the World Series rating is predicted to be calculated to 10.2 share. It's about 500,000 fewer viewers than the 10.6 of last year (however they figure that out). In comparison last year's Super Bowl rated a 49.1. You're arguing that it's because the Pats were chasing history. OK, a valid argument. The 2007 Super Bowl (a rainy Colts/Bears game that was over by half time) pulled a 42.6. And House, the show that broadcast instead of the World Series game on Tuesday got a 13.1 rating. Ouch! So, is baseball's time as officially "America's Pastime" over? It would appear that it has at least lost relevance as far as people watching it on TV. It's standing as numero uno in the US has been sliding for some time, and I think it's officially fallen. If the ratings don't speak for themselves than the merchandise sales should. I'm not going to look those numbers up, you have Google too.

But why the change? I think it's because the US is so much faster now. I mean when my dad was a kid, baseball was all you did as far as sports go. It was nothing to sit around with a glass of lemonade and watch a game live or on TV. Now it's almost a ritual to eat greasy food and drink a brew every Sunday in the Fall/Winter. It has to be the ADD of the world today that has contributed to baseball's fall from great. First of all, MLB is asking a lot for people today to watch and entire 160+ game season plus post season. I mean that is a ton of games. Speaking for myself, I don't think I caught a dozen baseball games this season. Keep in mind that in some points during the baseball season there is NOTHING else on TV but baseball. In contrast, for football, you have sixteen games most of which take place on the same day of the week. One day a week you commit to your team. I think it's because of this that people go all out for the sport. And the fact that the football season is over almost as quickly as it starts keeps people pining for the game when it's over. It also can't help that the Fall Classic takes place at the worst possible time. Take a look. The NFL season is exactly halfway done, gut check time for most teams. It's an exciting time for football fans. Pro basketball is just starting. In a game where rookies often make an instant impact faster than any other, fans are stoked to see what there new-look teams look like. With the parody in the NFL and NBA to an extent, every tea has a chance at this time of year. Baseball can't compete.

Sure, Sportscenter (and ESPN) has and will cover the Phillies championship ad nausea for the next month. But the question is, do people really care?

Is anyone concerned about chlorine poisoning?

Seriously, I think I may have a bout of pool water poisoning. Let me explain. About three months ago I started swimming every night at my gym. It's open 24 hours and I work at midnight it seemed like a good idea. Well swimming is a terrific form of excerise and I now swim more than 30 laps at least three times a week. Here is my problem. Every now and again the pool is a little more chlorine treated than I would like. Not so much that my skin turns white, which many of my friends would enjoy the opporunity to make fun, but enough to make I hair feel like straw and my teeth feel like they're lined with plastic wrap. I tried to wash the chlorine off in the shower afterwards, but it never really seemed to work well. One evening a plump man dressed as a mechanic interupted me during my swim. He asked if my eyes were ok, and I said they were. He began to measure the PH levels in the pool and I kept right on swimming. For the next three weeks or so the pool was perfect. Finally, I thought there was some relief from the chlorine overdose. It was like swimming in bath water. Just enough chlorine to taste bad if you were to try and drink the pool water. I had raised my standard of hair care and had begun using a conditioner (coconut) when washing my hair. When exiting the pool I found my hair was smooth and flowing, my teeth were absent of all residue, and my eyes were never clearer. Everything was going great. Then last week I noticed a decline in the water quality again. Sticky hair and fuzzy teeth were again adjectives for yours truly. On Wedensday, Plumpy came into the pool area again and asked how long I would be swimming. Dressed in shorts and a t-shirt he explained he needed to shock the pool, and if he waited much longer he would have to leave and come back later in the evening. As I explained, I swim before I go to work. So feeling nice and being on lap 26, I told Plumpy I would go. I didn't return until the following Monday. This past Monday I performed my usual routine and began swimming. Again, hay hair and crack teeth. What is going on? "Well," I figured "It isn't like I haven't done this before." I immediately started dreading the drive to work in which my lips would stick to my teeth like Arnie from What's Eating Gilbert Grape and my hair would catch anything that came in contact with it. I swam on. 30 laps later I started to exit the pool and towel off when I noticed a strange sensation. My tongue started to tingle. Not like I-had-too-many-white-russians tingle but I-just-sucked-on-a-car-battery tingle. I started biting my tongue, which must have been a site to see, trying to get the buzzing to stop. It finally did, but when I was showring off it happened again. I became afraid to swallow my own saliva. Fearing every drop of spit would further poison my system with chlorine. Am I going to die? "No that's silly" I thought. I continued on to work. While "working" I noticed my skin felt as though it had a slight film across it. Looking closely, my skin glistened and it seemed as though I could see each piece of tissue. Sticky hair, gooey teeth, and now shiny skin. Is something wrong here? I figured it was my imagination. When I retunred home I took a shower washed, rinsed, repeated and conditioned. All seemed well. I used the excuse of running and swimming the previous day to skip my Tuesday session at the gym, but I returned again last night to try my luck one more time. To my surprise, the pool was closed. No explanation just a sign saying "Closed" with a picture of a power drill. Closed. Why on Earth would it be closed? Perhaps and unheard of amount of chlorine was mistakinly put into the pool causing massive reactions to all who entered that day. Surely one lone swimmer in the wee hours of the morning the day before would be overlooked. What if everyone has Something About Mary Hair, and Arnie teeth? What if they just forgot to tell me my life was in danger? Is there such thing as chlorine poisoning? Because WebMD is mum on the subject. I may have a case here.

I am completely consumed by the election season (mate).

'Tis the season. The season for mud slinging and agenda singing. At least there's no redneck candidate who I'm finding I'd rather vote for than a guy whose identity is held completely by his campaign advisers, and I feel like letting the redneck continue to screw up what he's already done rather than let the new guy screw up more trying to "fix" everything. But I digress. It's seeming to me that every election year since I have been old enough to vote is "The biggest election of my lifetime." I mean, can this really be true? How many U.S. Presidents are really an important part of history. OK, most all of them, but you know what I mean. So the way I'm looking at it now is like this. I'm not a party voter. In fact I don't care what party gets into the White House as long as they do what I want them to do. That's what I'm paying them for (that's a joke, but not really). So do I want the Jackie Robinson of politics to make history while attempting to improve our way of life inside this country. Or, am I keen on GI Joe who's going to mildly improve our way of life while ultimately trying to improve our country's interest outside in the rest of the world. In an unprecedented manner I don't know. I don't have a quick, knee jerk, gut instinct type reaction about exactly what I prefer. Well, not true. I know what I want. I want gas at $1.89/ gallon. I want health care where it is because, I have it. I want government programs scalped if they're not doing anyone any good. I want the government to govern and not bail out. I want peace overall, not just where it's convenient. I want our country to be dependent on our country for everything it can be. I want people to have jobs so they'll stop going to temp agency's, be discriminated against, and call me at 4:oo AM to complain about it. But what I want isn't exactly what the politicians have on their agendas. Hey, they're smarter than me so maybe they can figure out all the details. Details which I guess will decide exactly which viewpoint I'll be taking in November. I want Americans to have the right to choose, but I also want them not to kill unborn children. I want small/big business owners to prosper, but I also want to keep money I work for eight hours at a time. I want to help the poor, but I want to be able to afford my own health care too. I want to drive my car and still be able to afford to buy something once I get wherever it is I'm driving to. I'm the one who wants so many conflicting things it's no wonder I can't decide which party will represent those feelings best. I never talk politics to people in person mostly because I hate to hear their one sided views if indeed they care enough to have them. So November 4th I'll check a box, and it very well may depend on which side of the bed I wake up on as to which box that is. Or maybe not. Hey if it doesn't work out I'll just move to Australia (that's a joke, but not really).

This Dude is Hilarious!!

Get Phil'd in! Well, at night around 3am (especially if I've been working diligently) the call center is not so busy. Since Internet games annoy me after a short time, and fantasy football (thank goodness it's football season) can only be analyzed for so long, I need to come up with my own games. Here is a game I came with early this morn. It's called the "Google Image Search you Coworkers" game. It goes like this, I Google search my coworkers and laugh heartily at some of the results. Whichever coworker has an actual picture of themselves show up first is the winner. Of course, that depends on when I type the name in but it's my game so whatev. Other records are also kept such as funniest picture, the most amount of times the name is used without actually having a picture, etc. Here are the results from the maiden voyage of "Google Image Search your Coworkers." (Note: The results are only tallied from the first page of results)

WINNER: Nate Ballentine

Funniest Picture: Jess Glass

Funniest Name Mix and Match: Chip Holt and Jess Glass

Most Name Matches: David Garcia

Closest Likeness: Andrew Owens

Biggest Contrast: Brandon Carr

Picture that made me laugh the loudest: Matt Murphy

And that's the end of the first game!!!
